Playing the Guitar - A Brief History of the Electric Guitar by Ignatius Gluck

As bands grew larger in the 30s and 40s, hence the term "the big band era", they got louder. Brass instruments are naturally loud and as these horn sections were added in strength to bands, who could hear an acoustic guitar over the din? As is usually the case necessity became the mother of invention and luthiers (guitar makers), engineers and musician's thoughts turned to finding a way to amplify a guitar's sound. Little did they know that the groundwork they laid would evolve into the modern technology of music made available today.
Initial attempts utilized microphones attached to hollow body guitars but the volume needed just could not be produced. In 1931 the Electro String Instrument Corporation created an electric guitar using tungsten pickups. It was called a Rickenbacker named after one of the company's owners, Adolf Rickenbacher. He changed the spelling of his last name to Rickenbacker partly because his cousin was the famed World War I combat ace Eddie Rickenbacker.
In the 1940's two of the most famous names in the electric guitar's history, Les Paul and Leo Fender, created their versions of this modern day instrument. Les Paul worked for the Epiphone Guitar company and in his spare time experimented with various electric guitar designs. Through the years the solid body Gibson Les Paul has become a mainstay of many rock guitarists instrument arsenals. The Fender Guitar company began with the Esquire, a solid body with a single magnetic pickup, followed with a two pickup model, the Broadcaster, whose name was changed to the Telecaster and in 1953, the Stratocaster was introduced.
Through the years many different models and designs of the electric guitar have appeared. Some mindbogglingly expensive and some quite affordable. There is also a wide variety of special effect devices and amplifiers to choose from. One of the coolest designs I've seen is the double neck electric six and twelve string used by Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi in the song Wanted Dead or Alive. Gibson also markets a Jimmy Page Signature double neck guitar.
One of rock's most prolific guitar owners is Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. He owns a custom made five neck, yes you heard right, five neck guitar built by Hamer Guitars and has owned over 2,000 guitars at one time or another. I'm still working on mastering a single neck and this guy's on five. Amazing talent.

The Art Behind the Music by Robert Benson

An Interview With Classic Rock Art Curator Michael Goldstein of RockPoPGallery
Rock and roll has been part of our pop culture for many decades and, so too has pop/rock memorabilia and art associated with it. Many classic album covers were created to not only sell music, but the concepts and images that were often the driving forces behind the music as well.

I spoke with curator and owner Michael Goldstein of RockPoPGallery.com about his business and why it is so important to preserve these pieces of audio history. Let's learn more about the man behind the scenes:
RockPoPGallery.com was founded in 2005 in Huntington, NY by Michael, a long-time collector of music related artwork, as Michael explains:
"It was my personal collection (and my display of it in my offices at the TV network I worked at) that got me into the business in the first place."
And his interest in the art of the music was apparent at an early age, as Michael details:
"My father was a cartoonist/caricaturist and, while I only had 20% of his natural ability, I did a lot of drawing. I'd done a reproduction of one of Roger Dean's "Flying Machines" on a wall in the basement of the house I grew up in, and that was the first time that I really sat down and took a look at the artistry that went into these covers. Growing up during the heyday of record cover art- from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones, from Iron Butterfly, the Electric Prunes and early Black Sabbath to King Crimson, Yes, Frank Zappa and The Mothers, and the Mouse/Kelly's works- all of those images ingrained in my psyche. Later on, when I got into cartoon animation and then into TV/Web production, I had a chance to work with some of the illustrators and photographers whose works I'd admired while growing up; and seeing how many of the still 'had to work for a living' made me mad/curious as to why these works of art and most of the people who'd made them were, in my opinion, seen as outsiders by the fine art establishment. I had to do something about that. These images were all expressions of the collaboration between musical artists, art directors, illustrators and photographers, and many of these images have certainly survived the 'test of time' even better than some of the music they accompanied! The artwork is about emotional connections and different forms of inspirations (sometimes chemical) and I think that is why my visitors enjoy the album art-related Cover Stories I write, as they're all about the art and the artists."
Not knowing much about fine art, I asked Michael about the specifics of the business, some rather obvious, and some that needed some clarification. Here are some of the questions I was curious about:
What is a print?
"To put it simply, unlike a painting, prints are made by drawing not on paper or canvas, but on a surface such as stone or a metal plate, from which the image can then be printed a number of times," explained Michael. "The surface is inked, a sheet of paper is then placed over it and the two are run through a press. The total number of prints that are pulled is decided by the artist and the publisher beforehand and this is called an "edition". Each impression in the edition is signed and numbered (and sometimes embellished otherwise) by the artist. Once the edition is completed, the original plate or stone is either defaced or destroyed so that no more can be made."
"Original prints are often referred to by the technique that was used to produce them, such as lithography, silk-screening and the newest (and somewhat controversial) method - digital printing (or Giclee'). I explain these techniques in detail on the website."
I asked Michael, how do I know what I'm buying is an original?
"In almost all circumstances, RockPoPGallery buys its inventory from only one of three sources - either directly from the artist, directly from the artist's publisher, or at auction from auction companies that can authenticate the "provenance" (the documented history of a work of art from its production to the present) of a work of art," stated Michael. "While many items come from these sources with complete documentation, this is not the case with all works and so we guarantee originality, based on our knowledge, provenance and the above checks. As an art lover, collector and a gallery owner I would not consider buying or selling a work of art that I am not 100% sure about. Upon request, RockPoPGallery will provide you with a Certificate of Authenticity, which will include a copy of the provenance provided from our sources. You can then go visit the web sites of the artists/publishers, and if the description of the print matches theirs in every detail, then there is a very good chance it is original."
What determines the market price of a particular print?
"The international art market decides the price, based on the principles of supply and demand, basic economics really," Michael explained. "Original prints may exist in multiples of more than one, which can account for a difference of thousands of dollars between the price of a mass-produced poster, an unsigned 'open edition' print and a signed and numbered limited-edition print. If a certain print is in demand and the supply is no longer there, the price will go up. However, price also very much depends on the condition of the print. Works on paper are extremely delicate and can easily be damaged by mishandling, poor framing, exposure to strong light and, of course, the passage of time. Prints in good condition are more sought after by collectors and therefore their prices are higher. And finally, some prints have been signed by both the artist/photographer and the musical act that the cover was done for, such as the Jimmy Page-signed Led Zeppelin IV prints, the David Bowie-signed Ziggy Stardust prints, and the Tony Iommi-signed Technical Ecstasy prints we sell. I have much more detailed information on the website."
What is the most expensive piece you sell, or conversely, maybe the most interesting item you have owned or sold.
"This really changes day-to-day and expensive is a relative term," said Michael. "Compare to a Warhol or a Lichtenstein or a Haring- all of whom did record covers- none of my images are expensive. The highest-priced items tend to be the pieces where the editions are nearly sold out- like the Led Zeppelin 4 cover art signed by Jimmy Page, Karl Ferris' photos for the covers of "Are You Experienced?" and "Electric Ladyland," Entwistle's "Who by Numbers", etc. As far as the most interesting item I have sold, well the one with the most personal story must have been my copy of Roger Dean's "Magician's Birthday." I bought one for my personal collection at a very good price and then was offered a lot of money to sell it, which I did; not knowing how much I really wanted to keep it. To punish myself and to let me look at it everyday, I had a section of it tattooed on my right arm!"
I enjoyed my conversation with Michael and have certainly learned valuable information about the fine art that is available for rock and roll fans. I think what impressed me the most about conversation was Michael's commitment and passion for what he does, certainly intangible qualities that you cannot place a value on.

Dance Etiquette - 10 Things Not To Do In Dance Classes by Kevin Shwe

There is an element in many activities called etiquette. In dance this exists also, of course in something like street or hip-hop dance classes it's much more relaxed but there are still things that you shouldn't do in dance classes.
So here is a list of dance etiquette or things not to do in dance classes. I admit it, I've broken many rules in the past and think many of them are pointless. So here's my personal list and they all have justifications, mainly to help you with your dancing:
1. Treat your dance teacher as a source of information. Sometimes people will go away from a dance class and say bad things about the teacher just because they didn't enjoy the class. Remember one person's lemon is another's lime.
2. Don't walk out of a dance class. Sometimes people will have a genuine reason because they have to leave early for an appointment or audition. But other than this it's respectful to stay in a dance class till the end. If it's really too hard for your level, have a word with the teacher.
3. Pay the teacher for the dance class. Unless you're on a course or classes are pre-paid don't leave a dance class without paying the teacher. They have to make a living as well!
4. When the dance teacher is talking, class participants are listening. If you've been listening for more than 30 minutes, a yawn is permitted, more than 1 hour and 2 yawns are permitted. Unless the fast talker invented the dance style.
5. Don't eat while you're dancing. Chewing gum is fine by me, but some teachers might not like it.
6. Be an active participant. Don't think that you can just sit out and don't need to practise, practise makes perfect.
7. If you're a good dancer, remember how hard it was to begin with and don't laugh at newcomers or who aren't as good. If they're your friends, of course you can but they'll probably bite you when they find out you can't tie your shoelaces or know how to read a map!
8. Don't turn up to dance classes blissed out or high on any substances like mushrooms.
9. Don't turn up searching for new customers for your latest business product or recruits for your life-changing cult.
10. Don't tell everyone in the dance class how great you are and tell them you're a much better dancer than them. Unless you want a ballet shoe in your face.

For instance a titanium tweeter will have different tonality then a silk dome tweeter. Two different brands of loudspeakers will have different tonalities as if they use the same drive units. The tonality of high end equipment mostly depends on the listening preferences of the designer. We will most probably not like if hear different tonalities from our own equipments even though the other system sounds much better. This case is so often faced; most of the audiophiles don't like the sound of somebody else's system despite it is a better system. This case is also evident when buying or testing new equipment at homes. We sometimes test better equipment at home but feel something is still missing compared to our own equipment.
I remember very well, when Sony introduced the first 20 Bits CD player, most of the people found the sound harsh, edgy and coloured. People used to listen dark sounding CD players up to that time and hearing more inner details disturbed them.
I also remember very well that when I modified my old B&W 801 Matrix II monitor speakers and cancelled their protection units, the new sound had disturbed me a lot. I was such unhappy by the new sound and could not have listened at my system for several days. At that time, the manufacturer expressed that "the protection units were needed due to the speakers were designed mainly for recording studios". They also told to me that the new sound must be clearly better due to the crossover resistance that affects especially the lower mid and upper bass was lowered fairly. After several days of listening them, the sound became better and better. Eventually the sound was surprisingly perfect after few weeks. Actually the sound was the same but perception was changing. (My brain reference was changing)
If this is the often case, how do we distinguish the better unit by listening! There are several ways of it but for me the main method is third dimension capability. This is not the only case for sure but generally speaking, if two units are compared, the better one is the one delivers bigger soundstage, more dept and more height.
This is also the theory of Peter Quodrup from Audio Note UK and I am hundred percent agreed with him. The distortion of an electronic device is does not effect the tonality of the equipment but mainly effects the inner details. Soundstage dept and height are such hidden factors in inner details that they will be affected first. If the unit provide lower distortion, more precise soundstage, especially more dept will be provided.
20. The Least Powerful Ring of a Chain; Hi-Fi is a kind of chain. Strength of a chain depends on the least powerful ring. Assume a water hose consists of variety of wideness. Derived water capacity will be in accordance with the thinner part.
A system should consist of similar level of equipments. If you add the best CD transport to a standard level of system, there will be some changes but not as expected. Also a poor digital cable will compress the entire sound quality of a very good system.
A long term plan should be prepared before setting up a system and the pieces should be purchased in time. Hurried purchases may come as replacement expense within one or two years.
21. Don't Immediately Judge a Unit, Give a Chance; Every system can sound well in time. System synergy is a kind of time dependent factor that sometimes takes months, even years. Sometimes we make quick decisions and quick prejudices for good products and immediately make unfair observations. According to me, the main element of the hi-end chain is the loudspeaker. If tonality and characteristics of the speaker is generally fine, or if the overall tonality of the entire system is generally fine, the system can be carried up for several further steps by playing with cables, tweaks, locations, tubes etc.

Critical Adjustments Should be Done by Listening Symphonic Music or Chorus Music; Once we decided about the main components of our system, we play with cables, tubes, tweaks and other accessories till finding the desired tonality. Adjusting the tonal balance of a system by listening single instruments or jazz trios may mislead us.
Upper mid and the treble bands of a sound is easily disappeared if somebody is far away from the original signal. This is the case, if we listen at a live concert or listen at a hi-end system. If this is the case, such instruments like saxophone, guitar, violin, even a human voice are darker and distant if we listen at a very good live record. Whenever we increase mid/treble band of the system by tweaks, such instruments became more open, detailed and dynamic. But one thing should be in mind that we may add a subtle amount of coloration to sound unconsciously. If a system is trimmed by listening small trios or single instruments, singe voices, this risk is really big. Such a system may not play a classical music performed by a big orchestra. If such symphonic music is listened, the system may reveal harshness and brightness.
It is often said that somebody's system plays well in classics but sounds quite dark in jazz, or somebody else's system is quite revealing in jazz but very bright and glazing at classical music. I believe this is the main reason of those phenomena

Hi-End is such a passion that so many opportunist firms and persons are added every year in spite hi-end community is not growing enough. Prices are multiplied by 3, 5, 10s every year. Every producer pretends to be one of the best in the world or at least within particular price level. Manufacturers issue review reports prepared by some ones!
No testing equipments in today's technology can prove that their claims are correct or no testing equipments can invalidate that their claims are wrong. In no way equipment can compare two units each other and prove that one is better sounding then the other. Pretended best in the world equipments/cables often suck in blind testing. If this is the case, it is easy to claim to be the best in the world due to nobody can prove the opposite.
The price of valuable equipment can fall down to 1/3 of the purchasing price within few years by the additions of MK-II's, MK-III's, Special Editions, and Signature Versions
While the best speaker in the world was sold by 7.000 ? Twenty years ago, the best speaker nowadays is more then 200.000? A poor line stage which is used to lower the volume is sold out by 40.000.?
Hi-End technology does not grow up for years. Most of the hi-end producers are very small family entrepreneurs that targeting very rich few niche people. They don't have proper research and development laboratories. Design and esthetical properties are the priorities.
I have the strong impression that Hi-End is digging its own grave with that pricing policy. We will see what will happen to hi-end after 30 years.
It is a deep less hole. My humble recommendations for the just starters is that go with second hand market products and go by reasonable priced equipments to minimize the losses of years. Never look for the perfect sound which is not exist in any money. Keep in mind that a 300.000? Worth amplifier may be % 2-3 better then a 5.000? Worth of his small brother.

Landscape photography can be a challenge, but with the right composition and good natural light it can be made a bit easier.

Lets start off with light: There are three basic qualities of light: intensity, direction and color.

Intensity: refers to the strength of light. If the sun is high in the sky, light can be harsh and too strong. Cloudy days bring soft and defused light.

Direction: this refers to light placement. There are three categories of light placement: front, back and side-lighting. Side lighting produces more texture between light and shade.

Color: the color of sunlight varies depending upon conditions and time of day. If the sun shines at the beginning or the end of the day, the color of the light will be much warmer, and will lead to a much more dramatic scene.

Understanding natural light will develop your ability to see. You will start to see the beauty of light in a different and exciting way.

In landscape photography it is very important to take care with composition. A normal scene can be transformed by paying close attention to detail. Composition is all about how you arrange the elements in front of you.

Lead with lines: To lead with lines into the main part of the scene will draw your viewer into your image. These lines don’t have to be straight. Lines, such as tracks, riverbanks or fences, may work successfully.

Foreground interest: Simple foreground objects can give your landscape a greater sense of depth. Use a small aperture (f/22) to keep the entire scene in focus.

Natural frames: Frame your scene with the elements all around you. This will focus attention on the main part of the picture. Trees make great natural frames.

Acoustic Guitar Playing Tricks Of The Trade

If you spend a lot of time with acoustic guitar playing you will need to pay attention to your posture if you want to avoid back problems. There is a lot to learn when you are first starting out so we will talk about a few of the tricks of the trade when it comes to holding and playing your guitar the right way.
Take your instrument and hold it so the back is touching your stomach. The neck should be to the left if you are right handed. Put the curved part of the bottom of the body on your right thigh. Next you will need to take a hold of the neck with your left hand and put your right arm down where the strings go over the hole. This is a good starting position but if something does not feel right feel free to adjust to suit your body.
All of you out there that are right handed should be using the left hand to press down on the strings. Bend your left fingers so that you can press down on the strings so they will sound good and clear.
The way the back of the guitar neck is curved allows your hand to be comfortable when playing. This will allow your thumb to move around to different positions so you can play at different places on the neck. You can place your thumb either on the back of the neck or along the side depending on what you are playing. In the beginning choose the position that feels best to you.
While all of this is going on with the left hand your right hand will be busy picking or strumming the strings. Your right arm should be comfortable on top of the guitar. A good place to strum is right over top of the sound hole. This oversize hole in the top is where all of that beautiful music will come from.
A lot of guitarists prefer to use a pick when playing. Hold the pick gently but firmly between your thumb and forefinger. Then you will want to drag the pick across the strings to begin playing.
If you are a left handed musician there is no need to fret over all of this, as there are options for acoustic guitar playing for lefties. One thing you can do is restringing the guitar in reverse. Another thing that you can do is purchase a special guitar made for a left-handed person.
Proper technique will allow you to spend extended amounts of time picking. Do it right and your acoustic guitar playing will not only sound better it will also be easier to actually do. Take the time to learn to do things the right way and your body will thank you for it.

If you are looking at a more expensive guitar, the necks may come in different widths for the same model.
Ask about the size of the strings that are on the guitar that you choose. Strings come in different sizes. They come in extra light, light, medium and heavy. The sizes of strings are referred to as the gauge of the string. You might have a favorite. If you have decided upon a particular model, you may want to ask if the strings type and size are the same on both models.
Ask if the store has other models of the one that you have selected. If they do, it is a good idea to try to play the other models.
Ask if some type of case is included with the guitar. For higher priced guitars, usually higher priced cases come with the guitar. The case should fit correctly and provide adequate protection.

Piano Lessons With Papa Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was unique among the great composers in many ways.
Not only did he teach his family music and harpsichord, but several of his sons became famous composers in their own right.
Bach's teaching method for the keyboard was valuable in that it gives us insight into a great master's view of children at the piano.
Most of Bach great teaching pieces, the most famous of which is the Minuet in G (remember the Diana Ross version?) were written expressly for his children and appear in a volume called Anna Magdalena's Notebook.
Since his children became famed composers, perhaps Bach had some great ideas on teaching children the piano. Of course, since musical talent is often inherited, perhaps he was also just starting with good material!
The first thing one notes when looking at Bach's teaching pieces is that they are all good music. By that I mean that the music itself, regardless of the fact that it was written for a child's capabilities, are of the highest musical quality.
I mention this only because so many piano methods today consist of utterly boring exercise pieces that kids are forced to play. Bach, in the wisdom of a great master, knew that to interest children the music must be enjoyable and tuneful.
Next, we see that the pieces are cleverly arranged such that the child is immediately using all five fingers of the right hand, spread in a row. Not only that, this five-finger position is used everywhere, so that the child is constantly asked to put their hand and fingers in this position, instilling the habit of good fingering immediately and automatically.
The child's hand is rarely asked to make advanced finger moves, such as turning the thumb under the index finger. And the complexities of this type of fingering are gradually introduced, starting with the Minuet wherein the index finger occasionally is turned over the thumb.
And once again, Bach is clever in his design of the curriculum, for the further one goes in the Anna Magdalena Songbook, the more complex the fingering problems becomes. But at the beginning of the book, he avoids the more difficult positions until the child has had a chance to gain familiarity with easier positions.
In a line of piano teachers that reaches from Bach to the great Franz Liszt, from the late 18th century to the early 20th, Bach's works for children are unique in their longevity, quality and understanding of both teaching and children's psychology.
Like any intelligent piano teacher, Bach understood the value of starting with something very easy to understand and then building slowly to more complex levels.
His children benefited from this easy approach, and your children can too.

When you are a beginner, how do you start with playing guitar? by The Review Mine

Beginners and guitar! Hmm, not exactly the best combination, are they? The reason I said that is because, I too was a beginner at a point of time and I too did the same mistakes that most beginners do despite having read through a thousand pages of beginner’s guides and literature. Now, about 4 years later, here I am preaching to the choir. But I simply cannot help it. If you are smart, you will get the gist of things by the end of this article. If not, then I will see you four years down the line saying the same lines that I said up there. So are you all set to proceed further? Beginners are a very impatient species. From the first day onwards, they seem to want everything faster than the average Joe on the streets. The moment I held a guitar for the first time, I was expecting to beat my instructor. After a month, I hoped to beat the Eagles (Whew!). If you are going on the same lines, then stop. Here are five pointers that should help you enormously in your learning process as a beginner.
1. Slow and steady wins the race. The person who said that was a lot smarter than most of us. The first lesson for beginners looking to learn the guitar is ‘be patient’. No one has learnt to play the guitar in 3 minutes or 60 minutes or one day for that matter. So if you are still investing your money in books that promise to teach you to play the guitar in minutes, then it’s a total wastage of your investments. The guitar is a musical instrument that requires a lot of skill and patience to master. So, set a realistic time frame to learn the basics and a lifetime to master it. 2. Hold the guitar properly. You only learn it once and you will probably find that you can never unlearn your first learning for years. So ensure that you get your basics right and hold the guitar properly. It should feel comfortable in your hands and you must be able to play both frets and strings with equal grace. 3. Start off with finger exercises. I still remember how my instructor always used to tell me to warm up each time I wanted to play and I wished I could strangulate him (If my instructors reading this, then please forgive me). But over the years, it is this warm up routine that has helped me hone my skills. Finger exercises are a very important part of your learning curve. It might seem like the most tedious thing at first, but without it, you will be like a kid stuttering to recite a poem. 4. Start by playing lead and then proceed to chords. Once you start playing chords, the impatient demon tends to take over and you want to play the most advanced chords in a few weeks. But chords are the core of any guitar lesson and you need to give it due time and effort. Go slow and take one chord at a time. Master it and then proceed to the next. 5. Practice, my boy, practice. The last thing you want to do is play your guitar once every week. I remember that I used to practice for almost 8 hours a day while learning the instrument. It has gone down now. But I still tweak the strings at least once in a day. No amount of lessons or reading material is going to teach you what practice will.
Keep these five things in mind, follow them routinely until you have reached an advanced stage. (You can play a few songs) and then, stick to the last point in the five. Have fun!
